Description:

CHESA BOUDIN LIVE
The Progressive Prosecutor Movement: Achievements and Lessons Learned from San Francisco

Chesa Boudin is the former District Attorney of San Francisco. He will talk about what happened and what is happening in San Francisco politics that offers lessons for other cities and political strategies. Unfortunately, the minority reactionary forces in San Francisco mounted a successful recall campaign against this brilliant, articulate, and progressive District Attorney. Local billionaires, real estate developers, and Big Tech spent $5.1 million on their recall effort that, in reality, began the day after he was elected to office. The Los Angeles Times posed this question: "If criminal justice reform can't survive in San Francisco, can it survive anywhere"?

Boudin is a criminal justice reformer. He eliminated cash bail in SF, reduced the jail and prison population by focusing on alternatives, and brought nine criminal cases against police officers for misconduct. Prior to becoming District Attorney, he clerked for Margaret McKeown on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and he clerked for the Northern District for California in 2013 and 2014. He earned two Master's degrees on a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford and later graduated from Yale Law School.
