In this fun, introductory series, journey into the world of linocut printmaking by exploring nature and the foundational principles and techniques used in block printing.
In this class, participants will begin with a short nature photo walk at the Sonoma Garden Park for field inspiration. Students will then head into the printmaking studio where they will have the opportunity to explore block printing through a series of exercises geared towards converting a photograph or a pencil sketch into a contemporary linoleum print. Guests will learn to carve and print a 4 x 6 inch rubber block using a carving tool, and non-toxic water-soluble inks to create a small series of creative block prints and hand-printed cards with a variety of paper choices.
No experience is required. This is a guided and paced process with three consecutive class meetings. This workshop is great for anyone new to relief block carving, and for those who may already have some beginning experience in printmaking they want to expand on. Whether you’re new to print, or looking to brush up your skills, this hands-on workshop offers a supportive space to create some truly beautiful nature prints!
Please note: This class requires some walking, and hand dexterity to maneuver the carving tools. Participants should feel comfortable meeting onsite at the Garden Park for the initial first class meeting. Students should also feel comfortable using tools with sharp blades and edges.
