Giving pause to fleeting last light and breathtaking color of sunsets inspires the artist in all to want to paint. Yet it is gone so quickly and we are only left with a lingering desire to see it again. In this course you will paint these fleeting moments as we examine changes in lighting, color mixtures for luminous blending, and strategies for rapid applications. This is a live painting course using our own visual experiences to capture impressions of color. We will also learn some of the limitations of photography and discover how it is possible to gather useful photographic references with our cameras.

This course is for students who have some experience handling oil paint up to experienced painters who want to expand their subject matter into the changing light of evenings and sunsets. Students should be able to work out-of-doors in the open air. Participants should be able to complete four paintings during this eight-week course. We will have regular critiques of work in class along with group discussions and lectures. Please see the materials list to learn what to bring to this class.
