Skill Level: This class is best for those with some clay experience.

In this 8 week course, students will investigate the bodily figure in clay through fragmentation. Fragmentation is a way to reflect and investigate how one part engages with the whole as well as how one part is an entity in itself. This method of working helps build the foundation for those wanting to work larger scale and/or figuratively, as well as helps recenter and renew curiosity for those already deep in their craft. We will work through fragments to find value in each component, bring attention to the small details, and learn ways to allocate time for the overlooked; a practice suited for many parts of life.

In each class we will focus on one ‘fragment’ of the body; class one-feet, class two- hands, class three-limbs, ect.There will be a demonstration, an exercise, and then time to work with that fragment to create a finalized piece or a modular collection of figurative fragments.

We will be utilizing handbuilding techniques such as coil building, some slab building, and the occasional solid clay piece.

This class will also include handouts of resources to help build a collection of artists and inspirations that investigate the body, fragmentation, and embodiment.
