Music in Place and MusicNomad are thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity for youth-led bands, an epic “Battle of the Bands” competition culminating in a live event from 11 am to 7 pm on May 17, 2025 at the Grinstead Amphitheater at the Sonoma Plaza. The competition is open to school kids grades 6-12, who are 18 and younger, who have independent “garage bands.” Bands from all over Northern California are encouraged to apply. Bands can be in any style of music: rock, pop, hip hop, reggae, jazz, funk, blues, folk, country, or classical.

Applications are open now (see below) and the deadline is April 15th. Preliminary judging will be on a rolling basis and conclude with the selection of twelve finalists and three alternates, to be announced on April 22nd. Judges will include six youths and six adults.

Cash prizes will be awarded: $1000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third place. The three winning bands will also be given the opportunity to perform at the Sonoma Farmers’ Market, on a Tuesday to be determined. The twelve finalists and three alternates will receive a musical swag bag filled with strings, sticks, and instrument care products from MusicNomad.
