MICHAEL MURPHY
On Living Well
Michael Murphy is the co-founder of Esalen Institute in Big Sur, a major center of the human potential movement that he co-founded with Dick Price in 1960. Today, 65 years later, it continues to be a thriving source of mind-body education and healing. Ever the innovator, Michael organized Esalen’s unique Soviet-American Exchange Program in the 1980s, which was a form of citizen-to-citizen diplomacy that brought groups of Soviet scientists to Esalen for month-long programs. We will explore some of the fascinating history of Esalen through the years and how Michael’s vision has steered this ship through difficult as well as great times.
Michael contributes his great awakening about human potential to the day he wandered into a philosophy class by mistake at Stanford University. This unexpected detour led him to drop his pre-med program and switch to psychology. After graduation, he spent 18 months at Sri Aurobindo’s ashram in India and has been a devoted meditator ever since that time, which bodes well for his extraordinary mind/body health at the age of 94!
He is the author of several books, including the best-selling Golf in the Kingdom (which was made into a documentary), Jacob Atabet, and The Future of the Body, a cross-cultural collection of documented occurrences of extraordinary human functioning, e.g., yoga techniques, telepathy, clairvoyance, and other superhuman capabilities. Michael Murphy is one of the movers and shakers of the 20th and 21st centuries, a true Renaissance man! Don’t miss this interview and chance to ask your own questions.
