Discover your creativity and daily serenity through the ancient art of Japanese ink brush painting known as Sumi-e. The Japanese term “sumi” means “black ink”, “e” means “painting.” In this art form, subjects are painted with black ink in many gradations ranging from pure black to the lightest shades achievable by dissolving ink in water with or without some colors. Deeply rooted in Zen and Wabi Sabi philosophies, Sumi-e explores the fundamentals of brush and ink manipulation. Join award-winning Bay Area guest artist, Fumiyo Yoshikawa and embark on the rewarding journey of learning to create your own Sumi-e masterpiece. Beginners are encouraged. No prior painting or art experience is necessary. Materials fee includes your kit of materials to take home, including: brush, ink, paper, felt, paperweight and palette.
